It has been a busy week in Ruby Class, and the children have shown real focus and enthusiasm across all areas of learning.

🌱 English

We have been bringing our Incredible Edibles unit to a close by crafting our final instructional writes. The children have worked hard to include clear features such as numbered steps, precise verbs, helpful diagrams and layout choices that guide the reader. Next week, we begin a brand-new text focus linked to our Geography unit on Migration, exploring stories of movement, journeys and change.

➗ Maths

Children are working within different strands depending on their next steps:

- Some have completed their work on fractions and are now moving into decimals, building confidence in tenths and hundredths.

- Others are deepening their understanding of multiplication, including reasoning, scaling and correspondence problems.

- A further group is exploring the properties of 2D shapes, with a particular focus on symmetry.

We have also had a strong arithmetic focus this week. It has been brilliant to see the children challenging themselves to work both quickly and carefully through a wide range of number problems.

🧲 Science

Our new topic on Forces has begun with a pre-learning quiz to spark curiosity and uncover what the children already know. We have explored pushes, pulls, and the force of gravity, using practical examples to help the children make sense of how forces act in the world around them.

🌟 This Week in Ruby Class

What a week it has been! The children have absolutely wowed us with their attitude, effort, and determination across every area of learning but especially in their assessments. Their enthusiasm has shone through, and we couldn’t be prouder of the way they support one another and rise to each new challenge.

A very special mention goes to our Year 6 pupils, who have taken their practice SATs completely in their stride. They approached each paper with maturity, calm focus, and a real sense of pride in their progress. I am so proud of them all.

🧪 Science: Forces in Action

In Science, we explored how forces can change the shape, size, and direction of an object. Some children investigated this using playdough-squashing, stretching, twisting, and pulling to see how different forces affect materials. Others explored fulcrum mechanisms, experimenting with levers and pivot points to understand how force can be used more efficiently. The curiosity and teamwork on display were fantastic.

🔥 Wild Tribe Adventures

Thursday afternoon was the highlight of our week as we welcomed Michelle from Wild Tribe. The children had a magical time learning how to safely light fires, followed by cooking marshmallows and making popcorn over the flames. The excitement was infectious, and the sense of achievement was huge.

Do ask the children how we got the popcorn to pop!

Ruby Class Update
This week, Ruby Class has been delving deeper into two wonderful new texts.
The Matchbox Diary has sparked thoughtful discussions as children describe key events and explore the character’s journey to another country. Others are reading The Unforgotten Coat and are completely captivated as they uncover more about the characters’ lives. Both books link beautifully with our Geography unit on migration, helping the children make strong connections between literature and real‑world themes.

In Maths, the children have been working confidently on dividing up to 3‑digit numbers by 1‑digit numbers with remainders. They have also explored patterns with shapes, as well as area and perimeter-developing useful estimation skills along the way.

On Thursday, we enjoyed an exciting trip to the RAMM Museum in Exeter. A big thank‑you to Miss Angus, Miss Hamilton‑Cox, Mrs Winter and Mr Bridge for making this visit possible. It was a wonderful adventure as we explored the museum in small groups, following the children’s own interests. Alongside KS2 children from Bradford and Black Torrington, we celebrated the amazing science and art in children’s storybooks, featured in the beautiful exhibition in Gallery 22.

We highly recommend a visit if you haven’t been already-it is truly stunning!

In PE, we continue to have great fun in our swimming lessons-huge thanks to the Ruby Oak swimming teachers for their support. Mr Meagan is also very impressed with the class’s developing tennis skills, especially as they learn how to take part in a rally.

Ruby Class News
It has been another fun week in Ruby Class, filled with curiosity, collaboration and lots of proud moments.
Maths
In maths, children have been exploring how to measure the area and volume of 2D and 3D shapes. They have enjoyed learning the formulas and applying them to different problems.
Other groups have been introduced to fractions, focusing on denominators and comparing and ordering unit fractions. Some children have also been working with money, adding different combinations of notes and coins with growing confidence.
English
In English, one group has been diving into The Matchbox Diary, learning about the life of a man who migrated from Italy to America. The children have loved stepping into role as characters from the story and using this to develop their understanding of speech and punctuation. They have also explored different sentence types, including commands, questions and statements.
Another group has been reading The Unforgotten Coat, where they have been exploring the experiences of a character living in Mongolia. The children have been thinking carefully about the character’s emotions and using inference to understand how they might have been feeling at different points in the story.
Science
In science, we investigated friction, discussing when it can be helpful and when it can be a disadvantage. The children enjoyed experimenting with different surfaces and drawing force diagrams to show their understanding.
Celebration end of term assembly
We are also having great fun practising for our Celebration Assembly. The children have been reflecting on their favourite moments of the term, and we are very excited to share these with you next week.
